Pack Lane - Public Consultation

Basingstoke and Deane Council have launched the public consultation on the future of traffic calming measures along Pack Lane.

The consultation documents are available for collection from the Post Office in Pack Lane or from a number of websites in the borough.

The text which follows has been taken from the Basingstoke and Deane website to ensure complete accuracy.

In 2003, the Council introduced traffic calming measures along Pack Lane comprising a series of fifteen pairs of speed cushions and raised tables at three junctions. Since the implementation of these measures there have been various calls for the ‘humps’ to be removed; others have called for the ‘humps’ to remain.

Hampshire County Council (the Highway Authority) has the final say on this matter, but as the Borough Council took the initiative for installing the ‘humps’, I’m reviewing possibilities for their removal or alternative measures. As part of this review the Council has:

  • periodically collected information about the speed of vehicles using Pack Lane, both before and after the ‘humps’ were introduced;
  • investigated possible alternative traffic calming measures;
  • made estimates of the cost of removing or modifying the ‘humps’ and of possible alternative measures; and,
  • consulted with the County Council, the police and the emergency services to get their views.

The Council would like to know what residents and road users think about the current arrangements and the options that have been considered. These are outlined on the fact sheet at the bottom of this page, which also includes background information explaining why the ‘humps’ were installed and what the results have been. For completeness and to avoid doubt I have included those measures that people may want to see but which are for the reasons stated not available to us.

Also included at the bottom of this page is a response form which you can use to have your say. I should be grateful if you would complete the form and return it to the following address by no later than 31 March 2008.

I think this is an excellent thing the council are doing. Too often they deciede these things without checking with us the electorate what we want.
I just hope that they give priority to the residents of Pack Lane and the other roads immediatly affected and those of some of the "do-gooders" who try to impose their views on all of us.
After reading all the documents I think that the humps should stay. What cost can we put on a life?

Maybe this blight on the lives of Pack Lane residents, the citizens of Oakley and natives of Kempshott can finally be removed.

The residents of Pack Lane wanted a crossing - instead they got traffic calming. Users of Heron Way take note - be careful what you wish for you might get something else entirely.
