Police renew Basingstoke town centre dispersal order

Police in Basingstoke are renewing the Section 30 Dispersal Order for Basingstoke town centre.
The renewed order under section 30 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003 will come into force at 12.01am on Saturday, September 1 and will be in place until 11.59pm on February 28.

The dispersal order will cover Southern Road down into New Street and Timberlake Road.  It will include Timberlake Road to Alencon Link up as far as the front of the railway station.  It will include Alencon Link to the Eastrop roundabout, up to New Road, past Seal Road and the police station and back up to Southern Road.

The Malls, Festival Place and the bus station are all included in the dispersal area.
PC Tracey Campbell, Beat Manager for Basingstoke town centre said: “These dispersal orders will provide officers with an additional enforcement option to deal with those who want to cause unnecessary problems in the town centre.  This includes anti-social behaviour by groups of youths.”

Under the Act, uniformed officers can disperse groups of two or more people whose behaviour they believe has, or is likely to, result in any member of the public being intimidated, harassed, alarmed or distressed by:

• Telling people in the group to leave the area
• Telling people who don’t live in the area to leave
• Telling people who don’t live in the area not return for a period of up to 24 hours.

Anyone who remains in, or returns to, the area after being told to leave can be arrested and could face three months in prison or a fine of up to £5,000.
