Funding boost for leisure activities
Everything from family concerts to foreign exchanges will be staged in the borough thanks to funding from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

A total of £5,800 has been awarded to six local organisations through the Leisure Initiatives Fund grant scheme. The funding is awarded to agencies and voluntary organisations of different kinds to provide more chances for people to enjoy a range of activities. It primarily aims to develop new areas of work that directly benefit residents in the borough by broadening their access to leisure.

Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure Cllr Keith Chapman said: “It is very important that people in the borough have the opportunity to access a variety of leisure activities and opportunities to enhance their wellbeing.

“This round of grants features a diverse mix of leisure opportunities that cater for a wide range of people and interests.”

Funding has been awarded to:

• Basingstoke Concert Club, £300 – Funding will contribute towards a family concert in the autumn at Central Studio. The concert will be aimed at children aged eight years and above and their families and will be highly interactive.

• Prime Theatre, £500 – Funding will contribute towards setting up three reminiscence sessions and workshops for older residents. The free sessions will be run by professional actors during July and will be designed to bring participants together, evoke nostalgia and provide sharing opportunities. The workshops will complement a touring theatre show entitled ‘Old World’ which will be held at six venues in the South East in the autumn.

• Kingsclere Heritage Association, £1380 – Funding will contribute towards a weekend of family activities at the Tidgrove Warren Farm archaeological site near Overton. Funding will be used to provide a range of archaeological and heritage activities over the weekend of 22 and 23 September including practical metal detecting and field walking.

• Old Basing Village Show Committee, £300 – Funding will contribute towards a visit to Alencon as part of their long-standing exchange with Socie?te? d’Horticulture de l’Orne. It is anticipated 30 people will travel to Alencon from 13 to 16 July to take part in a weekend focusing mostly on gardening. The French organisation is working on the creation of an experimental garden in which a section has been allocated to the Old Basing Village Show group.

• Basingstoke Bluefins Swimming Club, £2,000 – Funding will contribute towards hosting an exchange with Dynamisport Braine-l’Alleud. Twenty members of the Belgium organisation – a charity which organises sporting activities for people with disabilities – will visit Basingstoke from 5 to 7 October for a weekend of friendly swimming competition and social activities.

• Whitchurch Youth Project, £1,400 – Funding will contribute towards providing four activity days for over 16-year-olds.

Grants of up to £2,000 are available to organisations through the Leisure Initiatives Grant Scheme. Funding can also be provided for equipment up to a value of £1,000. A maximum of £500 is available to individuals. For more information visit http://www.basingstoke.gov.uk/leisure/workingwithus/grants/initiativesfund.htm.
