Police in Basingstoke have exercised powers to evict around 50 travellers from an area of land in Popley.
On Tuesday, June 19, offenders served a notice to a group of travellers who had congregated on Aldermaston open space, behind the Apollo Hotel. They had been in the area since Friday, June 15 and were asked to leave under Section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act. Chief Inspector Jill Baldry said: “Where travellers arrive in such numbers on land where they are trespassing it becomes necessary to consider using the powers available to us to evict them. The conditions around this are fairly stringent and in this case the group we moved on met that criteria. “From the outset we sought the co-operation of the travellers and with an effective use of police resources and council employees the travellers left the borough of Basingstoke and Deane without significant event. “A clear up operation began immediately after their departure and the areas made inaccessible to future encampments."
