New Super Crew gives back as it takes. |
The first crew in the South East to give practical advice on recycling whilst collecting resident’s waste has taken to the streets of Basingstoke this week.
The launch of this new ‘Super Crew’ initiative by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council as part of it’s bid to increase recycling coincides with National ‘Recycle Now Week’.
The council had identified that one main reason for residents not recycling is that they are unsure of what can and can’t be recycled. To combat this, the new Super Crew will collect the resident’s green bin as usual but now they will also be on hand to offer advice what can and can’t go in the green bins, give residents information on other recycling facilities in the local area and help with any general problems residents may be having with recycling.
The new specially trained Super Crew will be visiting areas across the borough for a trial period of three months from June to August after which the council will decide on how best to continue and expand the project.
The crew, made up of one driver and one advisor, has been partly funded by extra income from increases in previous borough recycling.
Cabinet Member for Environment and champion for climate change Cllr Elaine Still said: “There has been a huge amount of national interest in recycling and the main aim of this project is to give residents more information in order to support them in going greener.
“We believe that this will be the first time anything like this has been done by a council in the country and definitely in the South East.
“We are hoping that this new approach to encouraging people to recycle more by using the knowledge of the crew will be a huge success.”
