An operation set up in Chineham to tackle anti-social behaviour has seen huge success and highlights the positive work of the Safer Neighbourhoods team for the area.
While a number of the young people were from Chineham, others were travelling in from across Basingstoke including areas such as Kempshott, Brighton Hill and Hatch Warren. To tackle the problems, PC Charlton set up Operation Good. Assisted by the Accredited Community Safety Officers, the operation’s initial purpose was to provide an increased police presence in the affected areas and deal positively with any offences committed, including making arrests and issuing fixed penalty notices. The team also started gathering evidence to identify the core offenders, 10 of whom have now been issued with Acceptable Behaviour Contracts. A Community Action Group has been set up which consists of local councillors, representatives from Tesco, Chineham Shopping Centre, Community Safety, Street Cleaning and local housing associations. The group meets on a monthly basis to discuss any problems and decide how best to respond. PC Charlton said: “Since January and the launch of Operation Good, there has been a steady decrease in the number of anti-social behaviour offences. In January we had 29, in February there were 18, in March there were 10, in April there were five and in May, just three. “I believe this shows the positive effect that Safer Neighbourhoods is having in tackling the issues in the community to ensure residents can live in a safe and peaceful area. By listening to people’s concerns and providing a visible police presence, we are able to deal with issues like anti-social behaviour that can become a major intrusion into people’s lives. “The methods we have introduced have been successful so far and through the Community Action Group we will continue to listen to your concerns and respond in the most appropriate way.” For more information about the Community Action Group, visit their stall at the Four Lanes School fete on Saturday, June 30.
