No cycling area enforced in Basingstoke town centre |
|
Cyclists who use the top of town are being reminded that the area is a pedestrian only zone and action will be taken against anyone who is seen cycling in the area. London Street, Winchester Street, Wote Street and Church Street are all designated no cycling zones, making cycling on a footway an offence under Section 72 of the 1835 Highways Act. Notices are displayed in the designated areas and anyone caught cycling in the zone will receive a £30 fixed penalty notice. PC Tracey Campbell, of Basingstoke police station, said: “The danger to pedestrians is clear. Cyclists who hit a pedestrian in a no cycling zone could face court action. We will be taking positive action against cyclists who offend.”
