Rising To The Challenge Of Climate Change

Issues from coastal erosion to coping with regular summer heatwaves will be put under the spotlight at Hampshire County Council’s new Climate Change Commission of Inquiry.

The Climate Change Commission will examine how Hampshire can adapt to become more resilient to the social, economic and environmental impacts of climate change. It will do this by considering evidence from a wide range of sources, learning from good practice around the world and focusing on what the County Council, and its partners can do to help Hampshire address climate change.

Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, said: “The effects of climate change will be far reaching, touching almost every element of our lives and surroundings. We may need to adapt buildings and infrastructure to cope with wetter, stormier winters and dryer, hotter summers, wildlife could see their natural habitats change, and our farmers may need to switch to crops that thrive in hotter climates or to growing crops to produce fuel rather than food, while the Hampshire coast will also change through impacts of climate change and rising sea levels.

“The Commission is to look at prioritising what we should be doing now to prepare for the inevitable climate change impacts, and what practical steps we can take to adapt to a changing climate, while not forgetting long term actions to stem the impacts of climate change. In areas where the County Council has direct responsibility we will be making recommendations for future actions and priorities, in other areas, we will be looking to influence partners, Government and other responsible bodies to act on our concerns."

To ensure that the Commission thoroughly examines the most important issues for Hampshire, it is calling for written evidence to be submitted to the County Council, which will be used to support and help determine the focus of our planned evidence hearings.

The Climate Change Commission will be Chaired by the Leader of Hampshire County Council, with the Executive Member for Environment as Vice-Chairman and the leaders of the opposition parties or their nominated representatives completing the County Council’s membership. To give full breadth to the deliberations the County Council will also be inviting external commissioners to join us representing different sectors in Hampshire from business to health.
