Kempshott

The Kempshott section of this web-site is in association with the Kempshott Kourier and the Kempshott & District Residents Association.
Kempshott has a long history, the area dates back to the early 1700s where the Duke of Edinburgh stayed at Kempshott House and later had his honeymoon there in 1795 with Caroline of Brunswick. Kempshott House has now been demolished to make way for the M3
The estate has since developed with the creation of Homesteads Road and Kempshott Lane to generate a farming community. However, this changed quickly to aid with the London overspill and Kempshott soon became part of Basingstoke. The majority of the housing was built in the 1970s and early 1980s in three phases referred to locally as the Lakes (between Homesteads Road and Pack Lane), the Flowers (off Heather Way), and the Birds (off Kempshott Lane). There have been some newer additions most notably the Gabriel Park estate (at the end of Kempshott Lane). The main road through the estate is Kempshott Lane with Homesteads Road, Coniston Road and Heather Way forming access routes and Kestrel Road, Heron Way and Gracemere Crescent forming crescents with residential cul-de-sacs. The majority of the houses in Kempshott are larger 3,4 and 5 bedroom properties, most are detached and the area has an established feel to it.
Kempshott Infants and Junior Schools are off Homesteads Road. There is a small parade of shops off Kempshott Lane in the centre of Kempshott. These shops include a Chinese take away, an estate agents and convenience store. Opporsite this is the local public house. Kempshott has two halls one is the Kempshott Village Hall, just off Pack Lane and the other is Old Down Hall at the end of Kempshott Lane. Kempshott is served on the borough council by three councilors (Cllr Anne Court, Cllr Christine Heath and Cllr Rita Burgess) and has its own Residents association to promote the interests of Kempshott. The Kempshott and District Residents Association (KDRA) has been running for over 50 years and its aim is to protect the quality of life for the residents of Kempshott. More information on the KDRA is available from the Kempshott and District Residents Association.
The Kempshott Community receives its local information from the Kempshott Kourier magazine delivered free every month to over 3000 homes. There are a wide variety of Businesses supplying products and services to Kempshott and to the wider Basingstoke area. Many of these can be found in the Business Directory. Kempshott is an area and housing estate in Basingstoke located to the west of Pack Lane and north of Winchester Road.

KEMPSHOTT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Going along Pack Lane you will have noticed that the site of the Pack Lane Garage has now very much come to the end of another era for Kempshott.  How long it has been there I do not know but I have been told that it was there before the Second World War.  E Beaver & Sons owned it.  They not only sold petrol, oil etc. buy were also engineers, contractors and dealt with plant hire.  It is soon to be turned into a site for residential properties.

PC Loraine Stockham Piece
Dear residents of Kempshott, The beat team has recently received a new addition in the form of PCSO Rafal Szmydynski (Raff). Raff is now a permanent fixture on the Kempshott beat as Rob has moved across to Hatch Warren leaving Kempshott with its own dedicated PCSO. Both Raff and I work together to reduce crime on the beat. Although our goal is the same our differing job descriptions provide us with a multitude of ways that any given situation or issue can be tackled. This makes our team more dynamic in the way we deal with crime and local issues. The end result of which is that you, the residents, are given a better service by your local beat team. You can see this in action in our monthly articles which will now be a joint effort with an overview of what we have been up to, followed by a police update on what I have been up to with advice on how to keep safe against the various crimes that are relevant for our beat. In addition Raff will write a PCSO overview with what he has been up to and what he is tackling in the local area.

KEMPSHOTT WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Travelling towards London on the M3 have you noticed the old barn on the right hand side situated between Hook and Fleet? For a number of years it has been in a sad state of repair but it has eventually turned into an Internet Car Sales Showroom. Did you know that it was the site of the first Cistercian nunnery in the British Isles? Our W.I. was given an informative talk and presentation on Wintney Priory by Tony and Wendy Heath. The Priory was founded between 1154 and 1171. It was dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene and they used to hold an annual fair around 22nd July. Because of “indecent dancing and singing of lewd songs” the Bishop put an end to the fair in 1338. This was a poor order although they did own 1 of the 4 mills in Winchester. They went through hard times because of the Great Famine and had to beg for food in the village. Then the Black Death reduced their numbers significantly. They did not always lead blameless lives. The behaviour of one prioress came to the attention of the Pope, whilst another was seduced by a man from Basing. As one of the smaller religious houses the Priory was one of the first to be dissolved by Thomas Cromwell on the orders of Henry VIII. On 22nd July 1536 the Priory finally closed its doors.

KEMPSHOTT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
The recent burglaries have renewed interest in our local Neighbourhood Watch network. There are a few schemes where there is currently no co-ordinator and I have been dropping letters off to the houses within these schemes to try and get them up and running again. I have also been approached by other residents who are interested in starting a scheme.

BASINGSTOKE MALE VOICE CHOIR
After a successful Christmas concert season Basingstoke Male Voice Choir is now busy planning its Spring and Summer programme. As a result of our Christmas Concert over £600 was raised for the Basing Unit of the North Hampshire Hospital and singing in Festival Place with the Ladies' Choir and Salvation Army Band raised a further £100 to be shared between Naomi House Children's Hospice and St Michael's Hospice. Our grateful thanks to all who supported us over the Christmas period.

March is the month to be on the lookout for mad March hares, so named because they can sometimes be seen boxing. Boxing hares are normally unreceptive females resisting the optimistic advances of amorous males or males trying to exercise their dominance over one another.
