Details While 'Dido and Aeneas' may have been Britain's first opera, London in the 1600s was in fact a hot-bed of music theatre activity. Two of the biggest 'hits' of the time were these two works, 'Matthew Locke's The Tempest' and 'Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen'. These fusions of music and drama were enormously popular, with songs from these shows sung everywhere from coffee houses to bawdy inns. In this concert the OAE presents an effervescent suite from The Tempest together with dramatised excerpts from Purcell's magical Fairy Queen, giving you a taste of this wonderfully lively music.
