In support of Bike Week (14 June to 22 June), which promotes cycling as a source of fitness and fun, Fitness First gym is launching the Park’s very own lunchtime cycling club.

Ross Hadley, Manager of Fitness First said: “Cycling is an important and enjoyable aerobic work out. At our gym, we have 27 spinning bikes, which can help people train and build their stamina for the real thing. We expect that the cycling club members will be using their bikes not only to come to work but also to socialise and explore the local countryside.”

Wendy Fletcher, Travel Co-ordinator at MEPC Chineham Park said: “By cycling to work, I can save up to 20 minutes on my journey, which makes such a big difference. The exercise even energises me for the rest of the day! It’s a great way to get to work and a much greener way to travel.”

Richard Hawkes, Estates & Facilities Manager at MEPC Chineham Park said: “Getting on my bike regularly has improved my health and made me feel better. I used to travel to work by bus and the journey took me over an hour. I now cycle into work and it saves me 35 minutes, which is such an incredible difference. My carbon footprint has been improved and equally importantly, I am now saving valuable time and money.”

Cycling is not the only way sustainable travel can be made easier at Chineham Park. Opting to car share can also have a huge positive impact on the environment, your time and finances. In support of the recent National Car Share Day, MEPC Chineham Park has launched a car sharing website, called Share & Care. In the first two months of operation, the site is already proving to be a huge hit with more than 100 people signed up to the scheme.

Wendy Fletcher adds: “We all have to make the journey to and from work and many of us will be travelling to and from the same direction at similar times in the day, car sharing is something we can all do together to reduce the environmental impact of commuting. Share & Care promotes a much greener way for people to travel to work and although we are encouraged by the amount of registrations so far, we are enthusiastic to build on this success. ”

Also as part of its efforts to be an environmentally and socially responsible business, Global Crossing has been running its own car share scheme for more than a year for employees at its two Chineham Park offices. Employees can register their travel details and find other commuters who may be able to share the ride to and from work. Participants in the programme also receive priority car parking near the building entrance.

“Our car sharing initiative is just one of several programmes designed to manage our overall impact on the environment and local community,” says Anthony Christie, Managing Director for EMEA at Global Crossing. “The car share scheme has proved popular so far; now the MEPC scheme will provide more opportunities to find travel companions from neighbouring organisations.”
