Police in Basingstoke are reminding people to keep their vehicles secure after 11 vehicles were broken into in Brighton Hill last week. Also a number of vehicles were broken into in the Gloucester road area of Hatchwarren and Coniston road in Kempshott
The incidents occurred on Tuesday, January 22 and Wednesday, January 23. Mainly all of the property taken from the vehicles w as left on display and was stolen after the thief smashed the car window. Items taken included satellite navigation systems, games consoles, a pressure washer and CDs , However in some cases cars were broken into and searched but nothing was found by the thief to steal.
The Basingstoke Safer Neighbourhoods team, said: “Brighton Hill , Hatch warren and Kempshott remain a very safe place s to live and visit but we are reminding people to keep their vehicles secure.
“We are committed to preventing and detecting vehicle crime but we need the help of residents to help us discourage car criminals. Theft from and of a vehicle can happen to anyone and any vehicle, at any time.
“Ensure you secure your vehicle whenever you leave it, even if it’s just for a few minutes. It only takes thieves a few seconds to break into your vehicle.
“Also, make sure items such as satellite navigation systems, include the cradle, mobile phones, audio equipment and other valuable items are not left on display.
“Clean the windscreen to remove any suction marks. The smallest indication that there is something worth stealing in the vehicle will encourage the thief.”
Hampshire Constabulary offers the following advice as part of its Safer Vehicles campaign:
• Don’t leave anything in your car – if it’s not there, it can’t be stolen
• Thieves aren’t picky, so don’t even leave low value items – often thieves will smash and grab first and look later to see if what they’ve stolen in valuable
• Don’t hide items under the seat or in the glove box, which is one of the first places thieves look. If you cannot avoid leaving something in your car, put it in your boot before you begin your journey
• If you are parking on the street, make sure it is in a well lit residential area in public view
• If you are parking in a car park, try not to park close to large objects, such as bottle banks, which hide your vehicle from public view
• If you have a garage, use it and lock it

Police in Tadley warn residents to secure their homes
Police in Tadley are warning residents to secure their homes properly and avoid becoming the victims of crime.
Homes in the Tadley area have been targeted since the turn of the year and officers are warning residents to make sure their homes are locked up properly, especially if they have UPVC front doors.
These types of doors can often be easily opened if they are not locked with the key from the inside, simply lifting the handle does not completely secure the door.
Offenders have been known to put their arm through a letterbox and use a tool to push the handle down and gain entry to homes.
Lynne Lawson, crime prevention officer at Basingstoke police station, said: “It is important that people understand that these doors have to be double locked to be properly secure.
“It can be easy for an offender to put their arm through the letterbox, cat flap or side window and lift the handle on the door.
“A letterbox deflector or a letterbox cage can be fitted to make access difficult and reduce these kind of crimes.”
Hampshire Constabulary offers the following Safer Homes advice:
-
- Deadlock your doors with the key – don’t just lift up the handle.
- Make use of all door and window locks fitted in your home.
- Consider getting a letter box deflector.
- Keep house keys upstairs or store them near the door out of sight for easy access in an emergency.
- Keep your car keys away from the front door and store them somewhere safe.
- Keep handbags out of sight.
