After removing old nesting material, the RSPB recommends that boiling water is used kill off any remaining parasites, with the lid being left off until the box has thoroughly dried out. Insecticides or chemicals of any sort must not be used. For further information about nest boxes, including tips about siting, the RSPB website is worth a visit.
The Conservation Group has been busy in the Old Orchard, opposite Kendal Gardens. We have constructed a wildlife habitat (sticks and brushwood in a small enclosure) and a log pile to provide shelter and a food source for small mammals and insects. They are located on the left hand side towards the far end of the park. Why not call in and take a look the next time you pass?
Nearby, between some trees, we will soon be planting some blackthorn, buckthorn and bramble with the longer term objective of creating dense ground cover, at present in short supply, for birds and other small wildlife. It will take time for this to grow, but a start has been made and we look forward to seeing it develop over the next few years. We have also taken the opportunity to clear a large quantity of lilac and holly, which were getting out of control, to give other native species of flora a chance to grow and take its place.
In the New Year, we plan to put up some bat and bird boxes in the splendid mature trees that make this secluded corner of Kempshott so delightful.
