Basingstoke Sites Scoop Top Web Awards

Two websites from the Basingstoke area have fought off stiff competition to each scoop a top web accolade at this year’s Hantsweb Awards 2007.

Basingstoke-Now were announced as the winner of the Best Local Area Website category and What's On 4 Little Ones were announced as the winner of the Best Special Interest Website category at a special award ceremony held at The Ark Conference Centre in Basingstoke on Tuesday 18th September.

The Hantsweb Awards are organised by Hampshire County Council and aim to recognise website excellence in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . Anyone can nominate a website and the awards are open to almost everyone, from businesses and schools to special interest and voluntary groups. The one thing they must have in common is an excellent website that is simple to use and delivers exactly what the user is looking for.

Now in its fifth year, the Hantsweb Awards continue to attract increasing numbers of entries. This year the competition attracted over 900 nominations for the 11 award categories. These were whittled down to a short-list of 33 finalists, three in each category, by a panel of expert judges.

Commenting on Basingstoke -Now’s website the judges said "We liked the layout of the site very much with its clear and seamless link to the Council website. The pictures are bright and it's easy to find what you want and has lively and current articles on the front page. The development of the site throughout the competition period has been interesting too- it shows that the site is being updated and improved all the time."

Les Gibson from Basingstoke -Now said "We are delighted to have won, especially considering the large number of other excellent websites in the category.  It is recognition to all those people who believed in our vision to provide a positive and interesting website for all web users in the Basingstoke and Deane area."

Commenting on Whats On 4 Little Ones website the judges said "A marvellous resource, with the design in keeping with its audience and message. Very readable and encourages the reader to explore the site."

Sam from Whats On 4 Little One's said "I know that we have a huge following of parents in Basingstoke and I'm so pleased we can help them get out and about with their children to the many fantastic activities and classes in and around our town.  To win this award is a huge "thumbs up" and we are absolutely delighted!"

Hampshire County Council’s e-Government Champion, Councillor Rod Baulk, said: “I wish to congratulate Basingstoke-Now, who are leading the way when it comes to providing quality online services for the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight . They should be proud of the work they have put into creating accessible, user-friendly and worthwhile websites.

“I would also like to thank all the sponsors of the Hantsweb Awards for their support and commitment to raising awareness about the importance of online services in the region.”

The Hantsweb Awards are sponsored by: Axon (main sponsor), Dell, Wave 105, Southern Daily Echo, ESRI, EPI-USE, Hedra, Microsoft, Lagan, SAP, Citrix, Progenit, Start, SEEDA, IBM, Wyse, Aberdeen, XMA, Macmillan and EMC.
