Detectives hunt Basingstoke burglars after victim punched in face

Detectives in Basingstoke are appealing for information after a woman was punched in the face by a man during a burglary at her home in Coniston Road, Basingstoke.

The incident occurred around 2.45pm on Friday, September 14 when two addresses in Coniston Road were targeted.

Three men forced their way into the first address and carried out an untidy search of the premises. During the burglary, credit cards were stolen.

Minutes later, the men entered a second house in the road, carried out an untidy search and stole £350 in cash. The female resident, a 26-year-old woman, was then punched in the face by one of the robbers and she chased them out of her house.

The three men then got into a gold coloured Ford Mondeo being driven by a fourth man, and drove off at speed, colliding with another vehicle in Coniston Road and forcing it off the road.

Two men have been arrested and are currently in police custody.

Detective Constable Tim Chappell, from Basingstoke CID, said: “This was a particularly despicable crime and I would ask anyone who knows who was responsible for attacking a defenceless woman after burgling her home to contact police.

“These men have used unnecessary violence and it is vital we catch them as soon as possible to prevent anyone else becoming a victim.

“I would appeal to all members of the community to contact us if they have any information. If you are worried about speaking to the police, you can speak to me in confidence. Alternatively, contact the anonymous Crimestoppers number.”

Anyone with any information should contact Det Con Chappell at Basingstoke CID on 0845 045 45 45 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
