Officers from the North and East Operational Command Unit have joined forces with partner agencies to launch a Crime Reduction Environment Work (CREW) event for Basingstoke town centre.
The event on Thursday, August 2, was an initiative aimed at reducing crime and creating cleaner, safer neighborhoods. During the CREW there were displays in different parts of the town about issues such as crime prevention, anti-social behavior and environmental health. There were also display stands promoting Shop Watch Specials and giving information on Sentinal Housing Association and Kingfisher Housing Association. The community were invited to ask questions, report any issues and take away information. Hampshire Trading Standards gave out 500 ‘Safe and Sound’ information packs which included advice on doorstep sellers and bogus callers. Neighborhood Watch supplied information packs advising people on how to set up a scheme and the benefits of being a member of Neighborhood Watch. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service provided information on fire safety and visited business premises to give advice. Accredited Community Safety Officers (ACSOs) and Community Wardens received enquiries from members of the public and handed out information leaflets about their service. Leisure facilities were arranged during the day, which included balloon making, a DJ Workshop and a percussion workshop. Acting Inspector Julie Young said: “Basingstoke town centre is a unique location where residents and visitors come for both shopping and leisure activities. “Police in Basingstoke work in partnership with The Malls, Festival Place and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to ensure that the area is a safe environment. “The CREW event provided a platform for engagement with the public and an opportunity for the police and other agencies to promote the positive aspects of the town whilst ensuring that any anti-social behaviour and crime was dealt with robustly. The day was a great success.” Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s corporate director Karen Brimacombe said: “The CREW event in the town centre proved a great success and many people visited the stands and took away information. We hope to be able to carry out more similar events in the future.” Gary Cooper, Operations Manager of Festival Place said: “We were delighted to host and be part of the CREW event. Ensuring the town centre is a safe, family friendly environment for our customers is key to creating a town centre we can all be proud of.” PC Paul Green, said: “This event enabled different agencies and businesses to work together and promote Basingstoke as a safe and pleasant place to work, live and visit. “I have received a lot of positive comments about CREW, both from the community and the officers and staff involved. I would like to thank all the people who participated in helping to make it an enjoyable and successful day.” Anyone who would like to know more about CREW can contact PC Paul Green on 01256 845316.
