Partners ‘time travel’ to plan for the future at conference
Planning for the future now was the theme as Basingstoke and Deane’s Local Strategic Partnership mappeds how the borough needs to change and develop over the next 20 years.

The LSP’s annual conference at the Ark Centre on Thursday (12 July) focused on what needs to go into a new kind of planning blueprint – the Local Development Framework - that will guide development in the area over the next two decades. The “Our future starts NOW” event helped in building up a picture of what the needs of residents, public services, community groups and businesses will be between now and 2026.

The LSP brings together a range of public services - such as councils, health services, emergency services and housing associations - as well as schools and colleges, voluntary groups and the business community.

All the delegates were asked to do some time travelling to give their views on issues such as how to conserve and enhance the borough’s countryside and heritage, how and where people will live and work, what leisure, health and education facilities will be needed and how the borough can make the most of what it has to offer.

The LSP has already drawn up a community strategy Pride in our place setting a vision what everyone is working together to achieve for the borough over the coming years. Workshops at the conference, on the themes of safety, health, learning and creativity, economic prosperity, protecting the environment and promoting inclusion and strong communities, will bring together the experts to look at the implications for planning in the borough in the future.

LSP chair Stephen Sheedy said: “To make a difference we all need to work together towards the same shared goals. We have set out the vision for the borough that our partnership wants to achieve together in Pride in our place, the community strategy. This conference was our chance to highlight all the planning issues that will help to make sure that vision is put into action.

“As representatives of public and emergency services, voluntary groups and the business sector, the LSP is key to identifying the environmental, employment, housing, health, education, crime prevention and other issues that the council needs to plan for in the next 20 years.”

The event was part of the work Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s planners are doing, working with residents, businesses and groups across the borough, to start to build up a picture of some of the issues, challenges and opportunities facing the area in the next two decades.
