Recycling can make a real difference to the amount of rubbish that gets thrown away and everyone can easily do their bit to protect the environment But when it comes to recycling it’s a question knowing what you can and can’t recycle that makes it easy. So here’s a checklist to help you recycle more.
All the following can be recycled in your kerbside recycling scheme: All drinks cans, both steel and aluminium All plastic bottles but please take the lids off first All clean paper newspapers, magazines, envelopes, junk mail, scrap paper, directories, brochures and catalogues All food tins including pet food tins rinsed clean. All card such as cereal boxes and food packaging. Please flatten or break up large boxes and put corrugated cardboard alongside your bin. Please make sure that the things you put in your recycling bin are clean, dry and loose. It’s important not to put items that can’t be recycled into your recycling container. Dealing with the wrong material is expensive and sometimes the whole bin load will end up being incinerated or sent to landfill. What cannot be recycled in your collection? The following items cannot be recycled in your kerbside collection scheme: Glass bottles – but please take these to your local bottle bank Drinks cartons – tetra-pak drink cartons too. There are only limited facilities to process them in the UK. Polystyrene and cellophane – there are no facilities currently to process these materials at present in the UK. Plastic packaging – this includes items such as yoghurt pots, margarine tubs, plastic food trays and flower pots. At present there are only limited facilities to recycle these items in the UK. Yellow pages – the yellow dye and ink are difficult to remove at the papermill and therefore it is not suitable for recycling. Shredded paper – is too small to sort and recycle. Plastic carrier bags – Do not use any plastic bags except the ones supplied by the council to collect your recycling in. All the different materials are sorted by the machinery so you don’t need to separate them in bags. Aerosol cans – These are not the same as food or drinks cans and should be disposed of with your household refuse. Food wrappers – Although chocolate bar wrappers and crisp packets may say they are “foil wrapped”, it is not foil. This type of plastic cannot be recycled. The ‘Scrunch’ test will help you – if it stays screwed up, it’s foil, but if it opens back out again, it’s plastic. Need a bigger bin?
